“Listen, Ned, I think that you’re a great young man, but I just don’t know if we would work as a couple. Like I told you before, I think I’m too old for you. You are a sweet young man and I think you’d be a wonderful boyfriend for some lucky woman your age.”
I see his eyes watering behind his glasses, the radio playing faintly in the background as we maintain eye contact.
“I know, but I like you. I don’t want a woman my age,” he retorts, looking at me with the same set of caring eyes.
Feeling sorry for him, I try to extend an olive branch to him. I think that the olive branch will figuratively shut him up. In addition, I figure that it will placate him to leave me alone. But, when I think of it on a deeper level, I’m unsure if I truly want him to leave me.
“Look, I’ll tell you what, Ned. You seem like a gentleman, so I’ll treat you like one. I appreciate you dropping me off at home, so I see no problem in giving you a short goodbye kiss.”
His eyes light up and he tries to play it cool, shrugging as if it wasn’t that good of an offer.
“Fine, I guess that would be okay,” he responds, struggling to keep his 18-year-old face stoic.
To be honest, I’ve always thought that he was a cute guy in his own way, so I’m not feeling strange doing this. It feels a bit odd doing this, solely based on the age gap. I am literally twenty-five years older than him, which could have made him the age of a son. Nonetheless, looking at him as we sit in his station wagon causes me to feel like I should be giving him more of a chance.
Hell, at my age I’m not exactly having hordes of male models banging on my door.
“Is that okay with you, Ned?”
His head nods in affirmation and he closes his eyes and purses his lips together in an almost comical way.
Well, time to get this over with and go inside. I got wine waiting for me and I got a new series to watch on NetPix.
My eyes close and I lean in towards his mouth. Seconds later our lips connect and I feel his soft lips pressing against mine. His tongue slides out of the corner of his mouth and makes contact with my tongue. My whole body feels electrified and I wonder what the hell is going on. What turned out to be a pity kiss is now lighting up my whole being. I keep my tongue engaged with his, continuing to kiss him while the engine idles in his old station wagon.
Hey, this isn’t half-bad, I admit, still kissing him as our lips remain connected.
Around a minute later I pull my head back and my lips separate from his. Looking at him, I give him a calm smile.
“Thank you, Ned. That was a wonderful goodnight kiss.”
I command my hand to grab the handle on the door, but my hand won’t leave my thigh. I am trapped, looking into Ned’s eyes and at his guileless teenager face.
“May I please ask that I may get another kiss?” he requests. Usually I would burst out laughing at how geeky it sounded, but right now it sounds too sweet and innocent.
“Yes, you may, Ned.”
My eyes shut and we both lean back in, our lips connecting moments later as we resume our passionate kissing.

However, I am engrossed in the kissing and it is hard for me to stop. My mind is telling me that I shouldn’t be out here, making out with this young man who is barely legal. And to think, I used to look down my nose at middle-aged men who tried to pick up college-aged women at bars. Our tongues keep wrestling and I try to pull my head back, but he keeps following it. My head gently bumps against the passenger side door, Ned’s head following mine as he leans across his seat. I’m unsure if it happens due to him losing his balance or if he is trying to put the moves on me, but moments later I feel his hands rest on top of my chest. I stop, feeling my heart melt at how sweet and innocent he sounded when he said it. I turn back around and lean my hand against the car door, looking into his eyes.
“I’d like that, Ned. But for now, I need to go inside and get ready to go to bed.”
Closing the car door, I feel like I am almost floating towards my front door. The feelings of us making out in his car now have me feeling like some horny teenager who snuck out to meet a guy when her parents were asleep. In actuality, I’m old enough to be the parent whose child snuck out behind my back. Nonetheless, I am feeling amazing and am glad that I made out with Ned, even if it wasn’t what I was expecting. I approach the front door and unlock it, allowing myself to enter as I hear the sound of Ned driving off into the night.
